Head Start Update: August 13th

August 13, 2024 by Mescalero Apache Tribe

08/13/24

Attention Parents & Community members:

The following is an update on the Head Start Program.

The Head Start will have enrollment at Carrizo 8/14/24 and at Mescalero on 8/16/24

The 2 Head Start centers have been receiving some updates, renovations and repairs that are still in process.  The kitchen renovation is set to be completed by the end of August therefore delaying our start date for children to 9/9/24.  I apologize for the long delay, but the replacement of the kitchen equipment was necessary due to health and safety concerns.

Our enrollment numbers continue to increase so be sure to get your application submitted.  We are expecting to be fully enrolled so get your application competed and submitted as soon as possible to secure a spot for your child.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Any families wanting to apply to the program can pick up an application at the Tribal admin offices as well or contact Anna Cochise, Family Service Manager.  Further updates will be posted on a weekly basis.  If you have already enrolled, please watch you phone for messages on Parent Orientation.

Thank you.

Potential hazardous/suspicious material has been investigated

August 12, 2024 by Mescalero Apache Tribe

August 12, 2024 The Mescalero Apache Tribe is aware of the situation at the Mescalero Post Office. There was a powdery, white substance that was found in a package at the Mescalero Post Office. It is known as diatomaceous earth. It is a source of silica and is an ingredient in toothpaste, cat litter and paint. It can also be used as a dietary supplement and it helps keep crawling insects away.

A hazmat team was able to test the substance and confirmed it was a non-hazardous material. The building is now deemed safe.

At approximately 3:30PM on August 12, 2024 it is safe to conduct business at the Mescalero Post Office. Thank you!

Deadline Approaching in New Mexico for SBA Disaster Loans for Property Damage Due to South Fork, Salt Fire and Flooding

August 12, 2024 by Mescalero Apache Tribe

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Francisco Sánchez Jr., associate administrator for the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the Small Business Administration, today reminded New Mexico private nonprofit organizations of the Sept. 9 deadline to apply for an SBA federal disaster loan for property damage caused by the South Fork Fire, Salt Fire and flooding that began June 17. Private nonprofits that provide essential services of a governmental nature are eligible for assistance.

According to Sánchez, eligible private nonprofits of any size may apply for SBA federal disaster loans of up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets. SBA can also lend additional funds to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize disaster damage from occurring in the future.

In addition, SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help eligible private nonprofits meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that cannot be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Economic injury assistance is available regardless of whether the private nonprofit suffered any property damage. Private nonprofits have until April 11, 2025, to apply for an SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan.

These low-interest federal disaster loans are available in Lincoln, Otero, Rio Arriba and San Juan counties and the Mescalero Apache Tribe.

The interest rate is 3.25 percent with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Interest does not begin to accrue until 12 months from the date of the first disaster loan disbursement. SBA disaster loan repayment begins 12 months from the date of the first disbursement.

Applicants may apply online and receive additional disaster assistance information at SBA.gov/disaster. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay services.
