Prescribed burns planned on 16 Springs Project Area

May 17, 2024 by Mescalero Apache Tribe

Burns part of overall forest management strategy for Lincoln National Forest

ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico, May 10, 2024 – The Lincoln National Forest will be conducting prescribed burns on the Sacramento Ranger District between May 13-18, 2024.Crews will continue to focus on 350 acres within the 16 Springs Project Area. There will be continued monitoring of the area after operations cease. Signs will be set up alerting the public to the project area.
Exact ignition dates are subject to weather and ground conditions, and can vary or be cancelled on short notice. Updates will be provided on the Lincoln National Forest’s Inciweb Prescribed Burn Page, and the New Mexico Fire Info website.
The 16 Springs Project Area is a long-term forest management project area in the Sacramento Ranger District. The project is centered on vegetation reduction measures for the land, including prescribed burns, fuel mastication, and timber removal for long-term forest health and large-scale wildfire risk mitigation in the area.
During and after operations, smoke may be visible in the 16 Springs area, Mayhill, Cloudcroft, and Hope. Following completion, crews will continue to monitor for hot spots, as well as regrowth and forest health in the project areas.
Exact ignition dates and scope of work depend upon agency administrator approval and conditions within the ranges outlined in Lincoln National Forest’s prescribed fire plan. These plans can be postponed on short notice due to developing conditions at the burn site.
The Lincoln National Forest’s land management strategy is centered on long-term forest health, including reducing forest fuels and using prescribed fire on the landscape.

DRMP Tree Give Away: May 17th

May 15, 2024 by Mescalero Apache Tribe

Do you have a green thumb? We thought so!

DRMP is going to set up in the parking lot near the museum on May 17th to give away TREES from the Greenhouse. They want to give away as many of the trees as possible. There’s definitely a lot to around to everyone interested, DRMP has about 15,000 trees.

They are approximately 18-24 inches high. They only ask to NOT plant them under powerlines or right next to homes.

This is for EVERYONE, tribal and non-tribal. They will have a trailer with the trees set up from 9AM until 3PM. Please call their offices at 575-464-4711 for more info. Happy Gardening!
