Fire Restrictions:

May 19, 2026 by Mescalero Apache Tribe

Due to the current Class IV/Stage 1 fire restrictions in New Mexico, we are facing a very high fire danger level. It’s crucial for us all to take these regulations seriously to prevent human-caused wildfires.

🚫 Prohibited Activities:

• Open Burning: No bonfires, debris burning, or the use of charcoal, coal, or wood stoves outside of designated fire rings.

• Fireworks: Absolutely no possession, sale, or detonation of fireworks on public or state lands.

• Smoking: Smoking outdoors is mostly banned unless you’re in an enclosed vehicle or building, or in a cleared area of at least 3 feet in diameter.

⚠️ Allowed Activities & Exemptions:

• Petroleum Devices: Stoves, lanterns, and heaters fueled by propane or liquid petroleum are allowed, as long as they have an on/off switch and are used in cleared areas.

• Designated Campgrounds: Fires are typically permitted in developed recreation sites or picnic areas with an installed steel fire ring or grill.

📝 Remember: Regulations may vary based on your specific county, city, or national forest. Always check local rules before engaging in outdoor activities.
