The Mescalero 4-H is one component of the Youth Development Program. The Mescalero 4-H club primarily focuses on youth 8-18, but depends on the involvement of families, which can involve even younger family members (Cloverbuds). The 4-H is a dynamic non-formal education program, which intends to provide youth with opportunities to learn skills, gain knowledge, and fun, and make contributions in such areas as environmental and community service.
Our goal is to enable youth to be engaged in partnerships with caring adults that foster positive learning environments to develop their full potential. 4-H aims to empower youth to become self reliant, contributing, and productive members of the community. We want to give our youth the chance to learn new skills, gain self-confidence and contribute to their community. Backed by the specialists and educators of the Otero County Extension Office and New Mexico State University we are able to provide leadership and citizenship experiences for our youth.
We initiate and support activities that provide a creative and supportive environment with which our youth and adults can reach their full potential. The Sovereign Nations Service Corps has been essential in supporting the 4-H activities. We are constantly seeking adult volunteers who are able to volunteer their time and talents in guiding our youth towards a better future.
The 4-H club was started in 2015 and already member, Rafe Wold, was awarded the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the Otero County Fair. We have sponsored two fishing contests, a garden party, field trips to Cow Camp #1, several local farms, and the Otero County Fair; providing youth with the opportunity to interact with goats, cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, as well as a myriad of garden experiences—basically anything that can connect our youth with the natural world.
